The PlayStation 4 is coming “holiday” this year and one of the most anticipated features of the new device is the ability for Remote Play with the PlayStation Vita for every game on the PS4 software lineup. This new feature of the PS4 is something that many PlayStation fans also hope bring new life to the Sony’s latest portable platform.
With this in mind, there is room for caution. Cross-buy has been a relatively beneficial platform for owners of both the Vita and the PS3. For those of you ho are unfamiliar cross-buy is a platform where gamers can buy one copy of a game and recive it for both the Vita and the PS3. This model has been used by games like Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Guacamelee, and Sound Shapes, Unfortunately I feel that this model creates a disservice to the Vita. Having games ported across the Vita and PS3, the Vita’s game library lessens in value. For instance why buy a Vita if half of their games are on the PS3 anyways?
With the PS4’s Remote Play service for the Vita I feel that the cross-buy platform will be unsubstantial and therefore should be ended. The Vita needs games, exclusive games, games that will persuade people to buy the system and bring more games to the platform. Cross-buy does nothing to help this.
Understanding that Remote Play does not work over 3G networks, I feel that the inclusion of remote play for all PS4 games is great to have under any circumstance so long as it ends the cross-buy platform. I feel that ending the cross-buy platform will lessen the appeal that developers can just port over their Vita game to the PS3 for more sales. Instead make a dedicated exclusive for the portable like Tearaway, in doing so will give the Vita more exclusive games for its library.
On the flip side ports to and from the Vita will always be a part of the PlayStation eco-system and while Cross-buy may support this in some way Remote Play would not be an adequate replacement for it due to the required internet connection. So really it’s up to you, how much Vita ports are the result of cross-buy?
