The Top 3 Franchises BioWare Should Work On Next

BioWare, the creators of Mass Effect and Dragon Age have placed their RPG spin on Sonic the Hedgehog and Star Wars in a triumphant fashion. They appreciated the original lore from the franchises they have worked on and there are still many franchises out there to bring their story based gameplay. Here are the Top 3 Franchises BioWare Should Work On Next.

3. Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy XIII was linear and Jim Sterling, from Destructoid, like many other gamers believe “the story is terrible, but the dialog is worse. An average conversation in Final Fantasy XIII goes like this: “Pulse, Cocoon, L’Cie, Fal’sie, Focus, Focus, Focus.” Over and over again, the same stupid words.”  BioWare is known for its fantastic conversation trees and story so why not have Square Enix join alongside this fabled developer? They did try to have dialog choices in Final Fantasy XIII-2 but they had no effect on the story at all. BioWare can fix this issue for Square-Enix. This isn’t as absurd as some may believe because Crystal Dynamics, the American developers behind Tomb Raider, drew the concept art for Agni’s Philosophy (Square’s 2012 Tech Demo). A joint collaboration between arguably the two most important figureheads of RPG gaming for this console generation can be an excellent showing of Final Fantasy’s potential for next generation consoles.

2.  Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra

Yes, this franchise is a cartoon on Nickelodeon but Avatar: The Last Airbender has a deep story attached to it. In the Legend of Korra, there is a war between both benders (people who can gain control of the world’s elements) and n0n-benders. There would be five different classes between Earth, Fire, Air, Water and Non-Bending and in addition to that, Avatar has a large amount of source material to work with for its classes and attributes. The combat system would work like Batman: Arkham City, when the main character has to battle multiple enemies and use special attacks to extend combos. Avatar also has an emphasis on character development, which is a massive component of many BioWare RPG’s. This company would be able to create the perfect Airbender/Korra video game and now that THQ do not wish to develop these tie in games anymore, EA can obtain the licenses. Make family friendly games fun, BioWare! There is an expansive audience for Avatar who are craving for a great game based on their favorite franchise so make it happen! If Batman and Star Wars can have interesting gaming experiences, so can Avatar.

1. Harry Potter

Throughout the span of all the Harry Potter video games, they have always met mediocrity. Fans are craving for a deep Harry Potter experience rather than a third person shooter so why not have a Harry Potter RPG created by BioWare? Being your own character within Hogwarts would be amazing as you learn spells, choose your classes and explore the grounds. The game could either follow the plot of the films or would be based after the war against Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. During the beginning of the game, your character gets sorted by the “Sorting Hat” as you answer questions given by it. Determining by what you answer, you get hoisted into any of the four houses. Think of all the possibilities within JK Rowling’s Wonderful World of Harry Potter with BioWare’s influence. With multiple endings and scenarios which occur from your choices, this game could be something remarkable. Potter fans do not want a Kinect or the Wonderbook experience attached to their cherished franchise; they want to be immersed in the lore, the characters and have an adventure in Hogwarts with their own customized character.

For the past 11 months, I have been writing for PlayStation Euphoria as Editor of the website. Five years ago, I moved from England to Canada in search for a new way of living. A lot changed but my love for gaming hasn't. Ever since playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis as a kid, I have played games almost daily. When I read my first gaming magazine, I knew becoming a journalist is something I want to do. At the age of 10, I used to create my own one page publication every month and share it with my friends and teachers. It's funny, now thinking about it, because I used to rate games HOT or NOT in red and blue bold font. Ever since then, I have written articles for various websites and now I have a great family of writers with me here at PlayStation Euphoria.

No fuck off. Bioware shouldn’t work on shit. Especially other licenses they’ve ruined enough already. Bioware the Uwe Boll of the gaming industry incapable of doing shit let alone a proper ending.

The notion that Bioware would take over the Final Fantasy series is absurd. Even with the hammering that XIII took from the internet, Square-Enix aren’t likely to sell off their existence for anything less than a colossal fee that would be well beyond Bioware. Besides which, Bioware deal with western-rpgs not jrpgs. Personal preferences aside, the Final Fantasy Fanbase does not buy Final Fantasy games for them to be like Mass Effect. In Japan alone, sales would fall through the floor, even if they kept it going in the west – something that seems unlikely.

FFXIII’s main criticisms were that it was railroadingly linear, featured a combat system that was practically automated, and that the characterisation was poor. All three of which are things that Bioware have been equally sliding down the proverbial slippy slope of late. Dressing up the linear as non-linear? Check. Using the lowest common denominator combat system? Check. Creating characters whose buttcheeks are better known than their histories? Hate to say it…

And at any rate the idea that Bioware do great dialogue is not one I’m on-board with, or at least not since the days of Black Isle proper. Dialogue wheels be damned! If you’re going to punch me in the dick anyway, does it matter if I agree enthusiastically or unenthusiastically?

The Hogwarts rpg would be nice, but I think if that was coming it would’ve been promoted far more by now. Besides which, it’d probably be an mmo, and Bioware’s track record there is somewhat uninspiring. Frankly, even though I’d love a single player rpg, the Hogwarts rpg probably has more to gain from the mmo environment than from the linear rpgs that’ve come out of Bioware.
