Sony Rumored To Be Shutting Down Zipper Interactive

A recent rumor started on Kotaku that Zipper Interactive, developers behind such tactical shooters as MAG, Unit 13 and the SOCOM franchise, will be shut down. While the part of me that loved the PS2 era SOCOM games is saddened to hear this, the rest of me is far from surprised. Every recent SOCOM game, as well as MAG fell somewhere between mediocre and disappointing. Unit 13 looked downright bad to me and all of this is really a shame because Zipper Interactive used to excel in creating great tactical shooters that required strategy and teamwork to succeed, but maybe they’ve lost their touch. Either way, the rumors are that Sony is already in the process of shutting the company down. However, Sony has refused to comment on the rumors saying only that they “don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

We’ll see soon whether these rumors are true but as I said, based on Zipper Interactive’s recent track record, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise–though it’s certainly sad news.

*UPDATE*

Zipper Interactive’s shutdown is offical, read there good-bye tweet.
