Persona 4, one of the highest rated J-RPG’s out there (93 on Metacritic), is getting a musical and over the past year, Jake Smith and his crew from Pittsburgh have been working on this production. Now, that it has a script, the cast are reading through the first draft for the show.
(SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT LOOK AT VIDEOS OR LISTEN TO SONGS IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED PERSONA 4)
Why does Persona 4 fit so well into a musical, however? First, the story has many dramatic plot points and a musical adaptation would do well with some songs describing the situation. Second, are the characters who are extremely likable and relatable by many. Third, is the world which can be recreated in many interesting ways in terms of stage design.
The cool thing about this project is that the “kids, parents and actors from the [Pittsburgh] community [...] came out to support [this project]” and while most of the cast have not played Persona 4, “they still offered up hours of their time to give [a] voice to the show.”
Keep in mind, however, that with this production, the initial themes from Persona 4 will not be in the musical as Jake and his crew want to work on independent works for the production which is perfectly fine in my opinion. The Persona 4 Musical does not have a definite debut yet but to keep updated, you can go on their Tumblr page.
